Smoothie Diplomacy

Two roommates, one tiny kitchen, and a treaty written in frozen fruit.

Heads up: this story contains Amazon affiliate links. If you buy through them I may earn a small commission, at no extra cost to you. The stories here are fiction. The characters are made up; the products, links and prices are real.

Priya and Imogen had shared a small apartment for six weeks, and the kitchen had developed borders. The left counter was Priya's. The right was Imogen's. The middle, where the toaster lived, was a demilitarized zone.

The incident began over a blender. Priya's was loud and small. Imogen's was a cabinet-sized argument. Neither would say the word "share."

It was Priya's mother who ended the cold war, by mail. A box arrived with a Ninja Foodi Power Blender and a note in careful handwriting: Make something together.

The first attempt was spinach, banana, and a leftover mango that had seen better days. It tasted, in Imogen's words, "like a field trip." The second, with frozen berries and oat milk, tasted like a decision. By Friday there was a chalkboard on the fridge listing flavors, and a vote tally.

The apartment also had a second problem: a spare room with a bare mattress, waiting for Priya's cousin Anand, arriving in two weeks. Imogen ordered a Bedsure bed in a bag so he would have something to sleep under that was not a coat.

When Anand arrived, he found a made bed, a full fridge, and a chalkboard with the title "Treaty of the Middle Counter." Under it, in two different handwritings, someone had added: Toaster is shared.

Back in the real world: the Ninja Foodi is a countertop power blender and food processor system, and the Bedsure set is a 7-piece reversible bedding set sold in a bag. The story is fiction; prices were what I saw on Amazon on Oct 8 and can change.
