Pepper vs. the Cabinet

Pepper was a beagle with a long record and no remorse. The record, kept in a notebook by her owner Isadora, included the Great Bagel Heist, the Missing Slipper Incident, and an ongoing investigation involving the third cabinet from the left.

Isadora had finally put a little Tapo indoor security camera on the shelf by the kitchen, mostly to settle an argument with her brother Lucien, who insisted Pepper was an angel. Lucien was invited to watch the footage over dinner.

The dinner was a good one. Isadora had finally unpacked the Cuisinart knife block set she had been saving for a housewarming that never happened, and she sliced a pear as precisely as a diagram. Lucien, impressed, forgot about the argument until the clip loaded.

On the screen: a beagle, a quiet kitchen, a long and thoughtful pause. Pepper walked to the third cabinet, studied the latch, and gently pressed it with her nose. Nothing opened. She tried again. She looked directly at the camera.

"She knows," Lucien whispered.

"She's always known," said Isadora.

Pepper, in the next room, was asleep on the rug with an expression of perfect innocence. The notebook had a new entry that night: Case still open. Suspect remains cute.

Back in the real world: the Cuisinart set is a 15-piece knife set with a wooden block, and the Tapo camera is a small 1080p indoor security camera. The story is fiction; prices were what I saw on Amazon on Oct 8 and can change.
