The Great Pretzel Uprising

Odalys had a rule for weeknights: if it takes longer than the cartoon, it is not dinner. Her son Teo, who had just turned seven, had a rule of his own: if it is not shaped like a pretzel, it is a vegetable in disguise.

The uprising began on a Thursday. Teo marched into the kitchen with a hand-lettered sign that read PRETZEL DAY and a plan involving every frozen thing in the freezer. Odalys sighed, set up the Ninja Air Fryer Pro her neighbor Ruben had lent her, and started feeding it whatever Teo pointed at.

It was louder than she expected, so she did what any adult does when a small committee is shouting nearby: she put in her Soundcore P20i earbuds and hit play on a podcast about lighthouses. For eleven blissful minutes she knew nothing about pretzels, signs, or negotiation.

When she took one earbud out, the kitchen smelled wonderful and Teo had gone suspiciously quiet. He was standing at the fryer, nose almost on the glass, whispering a countdown.

"Five, four, three..."

The basket slid out. Everything was golden, and two of the things were, with a lot of imagination, pretzel shaped. Teo declared the uprising a victory and awarded himself a medal made from a cereal box.

Ruben never got his air fryer back that weekend. Odalys said she was "testing it for him." Ruben said he understood. They both knew how this ends.
