The Cinnamon Roll Summit

Teodora Marsh invited exactly two neighbors over to bake cinnamon rolls, and by noon there were nine people in her kitchen and a line out the back door.

The Cuisinart stand mixer had been a gift to herself, bought after eleven years of kneading dough by hand and complaining about it. It sat on the counter like a patient engine, turning one enormous batch after another while Teodora handed out aprons and instructions.

Somebody had brought the Soundcore 2 speaker, and somebody else had brought a playlist that was mostly songs about dancing in kitchens. Within an hour the flour had reached the ceiling and the oldest neighbor, Mr. Abernathy, was waltzing with a rolling pin.

The rolls came out lopsided and enormous. Nobody cared. They ate them standing up, burning their fingers, arguing about whether there should be more icing (there should always be more icing).

At the end of the night, Teodora slipped a Versace mini fragrance set into Mr. Abernathy's coat pocket as a thank-you for his dancing and for fixing her gate in August. He found it on the walk home and stopped under a streetlight to smell every little bottle.

He called it the best Saturday he'd had in years.
