Christmas guide
Christmas dinner table setting checklist
A tidy table makes a big family dinner feel calm. This checklist covers seating, place cards, a simple menu and labeling dishes so guests with allergies can eat safely, plus a potluck plan if everyone is bringing something.
One week before
- Confirm the guest count and any food allergies or diets.
- Decide who sits where. Mix generations and keep people who love to talk near each other.
- If it is a potluck, share a sign-up sheet so you can see how many mains, sides and desserts are covered.
- Plan the table: tables, chairs, tablecloth and serving space.
Two days before
- Write names on place cards and lay them out in order.
- Write or print a menu card for the table.
- Label serving dishes with the name and any main allergens such as nuts, dairy, eggs and gluten.
- Set out serving spoons and extra plates.
On the day
- Set the table early, then step back and check that every seat has a place card.
- Put the menu card where guests can see it.
- Place dish labels next to each dish as it goes on the buffet.
- Keep one empty spot on the buffet for last-minute dishes.
Potluck tips
Group dishes by category on the sign-up sheet and add a still-needed line. People are more likely to fill a gap they can see.
Ask guests to bring their dish in a pan they can leave or take home, and to bring a serving spoon.
