Eleven Onions

A man promised soup to the whole street and then remembered how many people live on the street.

Ignatius Pell said the words "I'll make soup for everyone" at a block meeting, and then he went home and counted the houses. There were thirty-one.

He bought eleven onions and a lot of carrots, and set up at the kitchen table with his new Fullstar vegetable chopper, which he had ordered mostly out of fear. It turned out to be the best decision of the week. The onions went in whole and came out in tidy little squares, and for the first time in his cooking life Ignatius did not cry over a single one, which felt like a personal victory.

The soup took all afternoon. Between stirs, he filled his Cuisinart electric kettle again and again, because the old lady at number nine had mentioned that soup without tea afterward was a crime, and he was not about to be responsible for a crime.

By dusk he was ladling soup into jars on the front steps while neighbors lined up with their porch lights on. Someone brought cornbread. Someone brought folding chairs. The kids ran in circles through the front yard, shouting.

The old lady at number nine received her jar and a mug of tea, and then, in return, pressed a small Burt's Bees kit into his hand, a tiny holiday gift she had been saving for a good neighbor.

"For the chef," she said.

Ignatius, who had never been called a chef in his life, went inside and had to sit down for a moment.

Back in the real world: the Fullstar is a vegetable chopper and spiralizer, the Cuisinart is a 1.7-liter electric kettle with six temperature presets, and the Burt's Bees Tips and Toes kit is a gift set of six travel-size products; the story is fiction, and prices are what I saw on Amazon on Oct 13 and can change.
